Construction Material Estimates: Concrete, Tile, Gravel, and Mulch

Good material estimates begin with the right shape, dimensions, units, and allowance—not with a false promise of an exact order quantity.

A material calculator turns dimensions into a transparent estimate. It cannot see an uneven sub-base, off-cuts, delivery constraints, supplier bag yields, or installation pattern. Measure first, choose the matching tool shape, then treat the result as an order-planning starting point.
Start with area, then move to volume
Square footage or square metres describe a surface. Use the Square Footage Calculator for rectangular, circular, triangular, or trapezoid sections; split irregular spaces into simple sections and add them. Tile, flooring, paint, and wallpaper primarily need area. Concrete, gravel, and mulch need area plus depth, which produces volume.
Match the concrete shape to the job
For a rectangular slab or wall, volume is length × width × thickness. A round footing uses its diameter and depth, while a tube or ring subtracts the inner opening from the outer cylinder. The Concrete Calculator shows all three. Check units carefully: a 100 mm slab depth is 0.1 m, not 100 m.
Tile and flooring: account for the installation, not only the room
Tile estimates depend on tile size, grout gap, cuts, layout, and the tiles in each box. Enter the product’s actual size and packaging, then add an allowance that fits the layout. Flooring and wallpaper use the supplier’s stated coverage per box or roll. If an area includes several rooms, estimate each section and combine the rounded purchase quantities rather than rounding only once at the end.
Gravel and mulch: density and depth change the order
Gravel is often sold by mass, so the density provided by the supplier matters. The Gravel Calculator shows volume and estimated tonnes from the density you enter. Mulch is commonly purchased by volume or bag; keep depth realistic for the project and check the bag’s stated yield. A material-cost field is useful for comparison, but delivery, tax, and labour are separate costs.
Use an allowance deliberately
- Use the product specification or supplier guidance before assuming a universal waste percentage.
- Increase allowance for cuts, complex room shapes, a directional tile pattern, settling, or uneven ground.
- Do not use an allowance to hide uncertain measurements—measure again instead.
- Confirm bag yields, density, and minimum order quantities with the supplier before buying.
A final pre-order check
Record your measured dimensions and units, selected shape, depth, material product, packaging, density where applicable, and allowance. Compare the calculator output with the supplier’s units—cubic metres, cubic yards, bags, boxes, rolls, or tonnes. For structural work, drainage, or a project subject to permits, use approved plans and qualified local advice rather than relying on a quantity estimate alone.
