Great Circle Distance Explained: Shortest Path on Earth

The shortest route between two cities follows a great circle — a giant circle on the globe — not a straight line on a wall map.

Earth is roughly spherical, so the shortest surface path between two points lies on a great circle — a circle whose centre matches Earth's centre. Mercator maps stretch polar regions; a straight line drawn with a ruler on such maps is rarely the shortest flight. Airlines and shipping software compute great circle routes, then adjust for winds, airspace, and ice.

Haversine formula intuition

Given latitude and longitude of two places, the haversine formula calculates central angle between them on the sphere, then multiplies by Earth radius (~6371 km or 3959 mi) for distance.
