How Rainfall Is Measured: Gauges, Radar, and Units

Rainfall is reported as vertical depth — 25 mm in a day means water would stand 25 mm deep on a flat surface if none ran off.

Meteorologists express rainfall as depth — millimetres or inches of water accumulated over a period. One inch equals 25.4 mm. That depth assumes uniform fall over a horizontal surface; wind, splashing, and funnel shape affect what a backyard gauge captures compared to official stations.
Standard rain gauge types
- Manual graduated cylinder: daily read at fixed time (often 9 AM local)
- Tipping bucket: each 0.01 in or 0.2 mm tip logs electronically
- Weighing gauge: mass increase converts to depth — good for snow melt too
- Radar + gauge blend: radar estimates area coverage; gauges ground-truth totals
From intensity to totals
