How to Measure Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)

A waist-to-hip ratio uses two tape measurements. Consistent technique matters more than chasing a single result.

Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) compares waist circumference with hip circumference. It is an adult screening measure related to body-fat distribution. It cannot diagnose a medical condition, but consistent measurements can be useful context alongside other information considered by a qualified health professional.

The formula

WHR = waist circumference ÷ hip circumference. Both measurements must use the same unit, so centimetres and inches produce the same ratio when used consistently. For example, a waist of 80 cm and hips of 100 cm gives 80 ÷ 100 = 0.80.

How to take consistent measurements

  1. Use a flexible tape measure and stand relaxed with normal breathing.
  2. Measure your waist at a consistent anatomical location each time; follow clinician guidance where available.
  3. Measure hips around the widest part of the buttocks.
  4. Keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin.
  5. Record the date, units, and measurement method so future comparisons use the same approach.

Why consistency matters

A small change in where the tape sits, posture, breathing, clothing, or tape tension can change the result. For personal tracking, repeat the measurement under similar conditions rather than treating one reading as definitive.

How to use the result responsibly

WHR reference ranges can vary by sex, age, ethnicity, and clinical guidance. The result on this site is an adult screening reference, not a diagnosis, target weight, or treatment plan. Pregnancy and medical conditions are reasons to seek individual guidance rather than relying on a calculator alone.

  • Body-fat estimates for another imperfect but useful trend measure.
  • Blood pressure, medical history, symptoms, and laboratory results when assessed by a clinician.
  • Changes over time, measured with the same method, rather than a single isolated number.
