What molecular weight means
Molecular weight is the sum of atomic weights of all atoms in a molecular formula, historically reported as a dimensionless number equal to the mass in atomic mass units (u). One u is defined as 1/12 the mass of a carbon-12 atom. For glucose C₆H₁₂O₆, adding atomic weights gives about 180 u — that is its molecular weight.
Biochemistry papers and mass spectrometry data often cite molecular weight in daltons (Da), where 1 Da ≈ 1 u. The term is most natural for discrete molecules. Extended solids described by empirical formulas (NaCl, CaCO₃) are sometimes discussed in terms of formula weight rather than molecular weight.
What molar mass adds
Molar mass expresses the same quantity with explicit units: grams per mole. One mole of glucose has a molar mass of 180 g/mol, meaning 180 grams contains Avogadro's number of glucose molecules. This unit bridges the periodic table to the balance in your lab.
