Sudoku Strategies: From Basic Singles to X-Wing
Games · Guide · By DailyTools Editorial Team · August 1, 2026 · 2 min read
Master Sudoku strategies step by step — singles, pairs, box-line reduction, and X-Wing — with clear explanations for each technique.
Games
Sudoku difficulty scales with the techniques required — not grid size. Easy puzzles fall to singles alone. Medium adds pairs and pointing. Hard demands fish patterns like X-Wing. Learning strategies in order prevents overwhelm and gives you a checklist when progress stalls.
Level 1: Singles
A naked single has one candidate in a cell — place it. A hidden single appears when a digit can go in only one cell within a row, column, or box despite other candidates in that cell. Scan each digit 1–9 across each unit to find hidden singles faster.
Level 2: Pairs and triples
- Naked pair: two cells, two identical candidates — eliminate those digits elsewhere in the unit
- Hidden pair: two digits appear only in two cells — remove other candidates from those cells
- Naked triple: three cells sharing three candidates among them — same elimination logic
Level 3: Intersection techniques
Pointing pair/triple: candidates for a digit within a box confined to one row or column — eliminate from that line outside the box. Box-line reduction: candidates for a digit in a row confined to one box — eliminate from rest of box. These are mirror-image moves.
Level 4: X-Wing
If digit X appears in exactly two cells in row A and exactly two cells in row B, and those cells align in the same two columns, eliminate X from other cells in those columns. X-Wing is the first fish pattern most players learn — powerful on hard puzzles where simpler techniques stall.
Strategy application order
- Singles (naked then hidden)
- Pairs and triples
- Pointing and box-line
- X-Wing and beyond (Swordfish, coloring — advanced)
Frequently asked questions
When do I need X-Wing?
Usually on hard or expert puzzles after singles and pairs exhaust progress.
Are advanced techniques required for daily play?
Medium puzzles rarely need X-Wing. Easy never does. Match puzzle rating to your toolkit.
Can I solve without pencil marks?
Easy yes. Medium and hard — pencil marks save time and prevent errors.
