Ohm's law states that the voltage across a conductor is proportional to the current flowing through it, with resistance as the constant of proportionality: V = IR. It is the starting point for analyzing direct-current (DC) circuits and understanding how batteries, resistors, and loads interact.
The three forms of Ohm's law
- V = IR — find voltage when current and resistance are known
- I = V / R — find current from voltage and resistance
- R = V / I — find resistance from voltage and current
SI units and common conversions
Voltage is measured in volts (V), current in amperes (A), and resistance in ohms (Ω). One ohm is one volt per ampere. Power in watts relates through P = VI = I²R = V²/R, connecting Ohm's law to energy dissipation in resistors.
When Ohm's law applies
Ohm's law holds for ohmic materials — conductors whose resistance stays constant over a range of voltages and temperatures. Metals at steady temperature are approximately ohmic. Diodes, filament bulbs, and some semiconductors are non-ohmic; their resistance changes with voltage or temperature.
Series and parallel resistance
In series, resistances add: R_total = R₁ + R₂ + ... The same current flows through each. In parallel, reciprocals add: 1/R_total = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + ... Each branch has the same voltage. These rules combine with V = IR to analyze multi-resistor circuits.
Practical troubleshooting
If a device draws more current than expected, check for short circuits (very low R). If current is zero, look for an open circuit (infinite R). Is Ohm's law a fundamental law of nature?
It is an empirical relationship that holds well for many materials under steady conditions. It is not as fundamental as Maxwell's equations but is essential for circuit analysis.
Can voltage exist without current?
Yes. An open circuit has voltage across it but no current flow. Current requires a complete conductive path.
What kills you — voltage or current?
Current through the body causes harm. High voltage can drive dangerous current through lower body resistance, especially in wet conditions. Both matter in electrical safety.
How does resistivity relate to resistance?
R = ρL/A, where ρ is resistivity, L is length, and A is cross-sectional area. Ohm's law uses the total resistance R in a circuit.
