The UV index forecasts strength of sunburn-producing ultraviolet radiation at Earth's surface. It integrates UVA and UVB reaching ground level after ozone absorption, cloud effects, and solar angle. Higher numbers mean faster skin damage for unprotected exposure — independent of whether air feels hot.
Scale and action guidelines
- 0–2 Low: minimal protection needed for most people
- 3–5 Moderate: sunscreen, hat midday if fair-skinned
- 6–7 High: shade 10 AM–4 PM, SPF 30+, reapply
- 8–10 Very high: limit exposure; burn in 15–25 min possible
- 11+ Extreme: avoid midday sun; snow/water reflect UV further
What raises UV beyond temperature
Solar elevation matters most — UV peaks near solar noon. Altitude increases UV (~4% per 300 m). Equatorial regions receive stronger UV year-round. Ozone holes and spring polar events spike UV temporarily. Fresh snow reflects up to 80% UV; sand and water reflect significantly — burn risk persists in cool breeze.
