Wind chill is not a separate physical temperature — it is an index estimating how quickly exposed human skin loses heat when wind removes the thin boundary layer of warmed air. Calm air at −10°C feels colder than −10°C in still conditions when wind speed rises, because convection accelerates heat loss from your body.
How the index is calculated
Modern wind chill formulas use heat transfer models for a standard face height with exposed skin, combining measured air temperature and wind speed at 10 m elevation. The Wind Chill Calculator applies the regional formula (North American or equivalent) to give a feels-like value in °F or °C.
Why wind matters biologically
- Still air: skin heats a millimetre-thick cushion that slows further loss
- Wind: blows that cushion away; skin surface approaches air temperature faster
- Moisture on skin (sweat, rain) amplifies cooling — wet + wind is especially dangerous
- Frostbite risk rises sharply below −27°C (−17°F) wind chill within 30 minutes exposure
Wind chill vs air temperature
Thermometers in sheltered spots read air temperature only. Wind chill describes human comfort and frostbite hazard for exposed skin — not how fast your car engine cools or pipes freeze (those follow air temperature and duration, though wind accelerates surface cooling of objects too).

- 0 to −9°F wind chill: cold stress possible with prolonged exposure
- −10 to −27°F: frostbite possible on exposed skin in 30 min or less
- Below −28°F: frostbite in 10 min or less; limit outdoor time
- Cover skin, layer clothing, watch for white patches on fingers, nose, ears
