The context window is the amount of information a Claude model can consider while completing a request. It can include instructions, user messages, conversation history, documents, code, retrieved knowledge, and other supported inputs.

What consumes the limit

Claude is particularly well known for long-context workloads. For example, Anthropic introduced a 1 million-token context window in API beta for Claude Sonnet 4.6.

One million tokens represents an enormous amount of text, but the practical value is not simply “put everything into one prompt.”

Leave room for a useful response

Long context is useful for cases such as:

Reviewing large codebases Analyzing contracts or reports Comparing many documents Processing long conversation histories Research and knowledge-management workflows

Check the model-specific constraint

Still, more context is not automatically better context.

If a user asks about one paragraph inside a large document library, retrieving the relevant section can be faster and cheaper than sending hundreds of documents.

Applications should therefore combine context windows with retrieval, caching, and summarization.

Context management also improves reliability. Important instructions can become harder to prioritize when surrounded by large amounts of unrelated content.

Because Claude's model lineup evolves, always verify the context limit of the exact model identifier you're using. “Claude” and even “Claude 4” describe multiple models rather than one fixed technical specification.

A well-designed application treats the context window as available capacity—not as space that must be filled on every request.
