Pizza Size Guide: Area, Slices, and How Much to Order

A 16-inch pizza is not twice a 8-inch — it is four times the area. Diameter squared drives how much food you actually get.
Food & Cooking
Pizza menus list diameter in inches, but hunger is satisfied by area — and area grows with the square of radius. Two 12-inch pizzas give more food than one 18-inch, even though 12 + 12 > 18. Understanding pizza geometry saves money at parties and explains why upgrading one size often beats buying two smalls.
Area formula
Area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)². A 12-inch pizza has area π × 36 ≈ 113 in². A 16-inch has π × 64 ≈ 201 in² — about 78% more pizza than the 12-inch, not 33% more. The Pizza Size Calculator compares sizes and estimates slices without manual π arithmetic.
Slices vs square inches
- Small (10–12 in): typically 6 slices — one per light eater or child
- Medium (12–14 in): 8 slices — standard couple meal with leftovers
- Large (16–18 in): 8–12 slices — party baseline
- Plan 2–3 slices per adult for main course; 1–2 for kids or with heavy sides
Comparing deals
A buy-one-get-one on mediums may lose to one large on pure area per dollar. Calculate area, divide by price, and add delivery fees. Thick crust and loaded toppings change satiety — thin NY slices need higher slice counts than deep dish.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 14-inch pizza double a 7-inch?
No. A 14-inch has four times the area of a 7-inch (radius doubled, area quadruples).
How many pizzas for 20 adults?
Rough guide: 40–60 large slices — about 5–8 large pizzas depending on appetite and sides.
Does square pizza math differ?
Square or rectangular pizzas use length × width instead of πr². Enter dimensions in the calculator if supported.
Do toppings change serving size?
Heavy meat pizzas feel more filling; veggie pizzas may need slightly more square inches per person.
How do I compare two pizza deals?
Find each pizza’s area, then divide its price by that area. The smaller cost per square inch is the better area value before delivery fees.
