Molarity vs Molality: When to Use Each

Molarity vs molality comparison for chemistry students.

Molarity uses solution volume; molality uses solvent mass. Molality doesn't change with temperature — important in boiling/freezing point calculations.

Step-by-step

  1. Molarity (M) = moles solute ÷ liters of solution. Changes with temperature (volume expands when heated).
  2. Molality (m) = moles solute ÷ kg of solvent. Independent of temperature.
  3. Use molarity for titrations and lab prep at room temperature.
  4. Use molality for colligative properties: ΔT_b = K_b × m, ΔT_f = K_f × m.
  5. Convert between them using solution density when needed: M = m × ρ / (1 + m × M_solute/1000).
