TDEE for Muscle Gain: Lean Bulk Calories

TDEE-based surplus planning for lean muscle gain.

Building muscle requires a calorie surplus above TDEE combined with progressive resistance training. The surplus size controls the ratio of muscle to fat gained.

Lean bulk surplus

Start with TDEE + 250–350 kcal. This modest surplus supports muscle protein synthesis while limiting fat gain. Beginners may gain on smaller surpluses; advanced lifters need patience.

Dirty bulk risks

Surpluses above 500 kcal add muscle only marginally faster while adding significant fat. Track waist circumference alongside scale weight during a bulk.

Protein and training requirements

Target 1.6–2.2 g protein/kg, train each muscle group 2× per week with progressive overload, and sleep 7–9 hours for optimal recovery.

When to recalculate

As lean mass increases, TDEE rises. Recalculate every 4–8 weeks during a bulk. If gaining faster than 0.25–0.5 kg/week, reduce surplus by 100–150 kcal.
